[Watch] Temba Bavuma survives lbw shout before reaching his ton on day three of SA vs SL 2024 1st Test

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma backed up his gritty knock of 70 in the first innings with a hundred in the second in the ongoing Test against Sri Lanka at the Kingsmead in Durban. However, it came in an anti-climatic fashion as the veteran got there after surviving an lbw shout.

The moment came in the 90th over of the innings as Bavuma went for a paddle sweep against left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya. As the ball went past the stumps, the two batters completed a run but Sri Lanka took the review. Replays showed that the ball had hit the bat, and the 34-year-old thus reached his third Test ton.

The Cape Town-born cricketer started the day on 24 as South Africa gained a 149-run lead after bowling the visitors out for 42 in their first innings on day two. The skipper's 70 that propelled the Proteas to 191 proved crucial as left-arm seamer Marco Jansen tore through Sri Lanka's top order, taking seven wickets to consign the opposition to an all-time low.

With the Proteas amassing a lead of over 450, Fernando managed to give Sri Lanka some respite by getting the better of Tristan Stubbs for 122. It ended a 249-run partnership between Stubbs and the captain. Meanwhile, Asitha Fernando dismissed Bavuma for 113 at the stroke of tea.

With the players heading for a tea break on day three, the hosts currently hold a lead of 515 and are on track for a massive victory and a lead of 1-0 in the two-Test series. The victory will also be a significant push for the home side as far as their World Test Championship final chances are concerned. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have their task cut out to reach the final.
