[Watch] Tom Latham bowled for 28 by a brilliant Washington Sundar delivery in 3rd IND vs NZ 2024 Test
New Zealand skipper Tom Latham's budding start on Day 1 of the third Test against India was undone by a superb delivery by Washingon Sundar at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, November 1. The left-handed batter scored 28 runs off 44 deliveries before being dismissed midway through the first session.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss yet again, New Zealand lost Devon Conway in the fourth over. The duo of Tom Latham and Will Young survived the seamers' new ball charge before spin was introduced.
Much like his solid fifty in the second innings in Pune, Latham looked in command of the situation and started building a partnership for the second wicket.
In the 16th over, Sundar bowled five successive dot balls, with the penultimate ball being the one that went along with the arm. The off-spinner pitched it on a length, drawing Latham forward to defend it. However, the ball held its line, just enough to evade the bat's outside edge and the pad to hit the off-stump.
Have a look at the dismissal right here:
Sundar had claimed Latham's wicket in the second innings of the Pune Test as well. On that occasion, the skipper tried to play a sweep shot against a very full delivery but missed contact with the bat.
Washington Sundar struck again to dismiss Rachin Ravindra in a similar fashion
Rachin Ravindra has had a memorable series so far but has not been able to get the better of Washington Sundar. The all-rounder was brought in midway through the series to tackle the New Zealand left-handed batters, and he has been proving the naysayers right with his displays so far.
After casting Ravindra twice in the second Test in Pune, Sundar again got the better of the left-handed batter. The New Zealand all-rounder had come into bat after Latham's dismissal, but could only score five runs before meeting a similar fate as his skipper.
As of writing, New Zealand are placed at 75-3 after 21 overs, with Will Young settled and unbeaten on 32 joined by Daryl Mitchell.
