[Watch] Tristan Stubbs departs after a dreadful mix-up on day 4 of SA vs SL 2024 2nd Test

South African batter Tristan Stubbs and captain Temba Bavuma were involved in a horrible mix-up as a needless run-out transpired on Day 4 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha. The right-hander tried his best to make it back to the non-striker's end but was at least a yard short by the time the bowler broke the stumps.

The incident occurred in the 61st over of the innings sent down by Lahiru Kumara as Bavuma played a pull shot in front of the square. The pair took the first run easily and the Proteas skipper turned for the second despite Dimuth Karunaratne getting to the ball quickly.

While Bavuma looked to turn back after running down the pitch halfway, his partner had fully committed to the run, causing him to sprint towards the dangerous end. As a result, the youngster couldn't make it back and had to walk back for 47.

The wicket also broke the 104-run partnership between the duo, giving the visiting side a massive opening in the contest. On the third day of the Test, Sri Lanka had nipped out Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, and Ryan Rickleton. This was after South Africa garnered a slender 30-run lead after bowling their opposition out for 328.

Meanwhile, Stubbs, who made only four runs in his first dig in Gqeberha, scored a fine hundred in the second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Durban. The ton from the 24-year-old helped the hosts set up a massive 516-run target for the tourists and they eventually won by 233 runs.

South Africa are also in a promising position as far as the World Test Championship (WTC) final is concerned as they are in the second spot in the points table. The Proteas will top the table if beat Sri Lanka in Gqeberha.
