[Watch] Tristan Stubbs smashes his maiden ton during IRE vs RSA 2nd ODI 2024

South African batter Tristan Stubbs was in outstanding form, scoring his maiden century in the second game of the three-match ODI series against Ireland. The game was played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday, October 4.

Coming in to bat at No. 5, Tristan Stubbs started strong, reaching his fifty in just 45 balls. He also built a notable partnership of 103 runs for the third wicket with Kyle Verreynne.

The 24-year-old took another 30 balls to add his next 50 runs, completing his maiden ODI century in 75 balls. Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten at 112 runs off 81 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes.

After South Africa chose to bat first, opener Ryan Rickelton made 40 runs off 39 balls, while captain Temba Bavuma retired hurt on 35. Verreynne delivered an impressive performance, scoring 67 runs off 64 balls, and Wiaan Mulder contributed 43 runs off 34 balls. The Proteas finished their innings at 343/4 in the allotted 50 overs.


Ireland loses half of their side within 10 overs

Chasing a target of 344, Ireland got off to a shaky start, losing Andrew Balbirnie for just one run off seven balls in the second over. In the following over, Lungi Ngidi dismissed captain Paul Stirling for five runs off seven balls.

Curtis Campher and Harry Tector attempted to stabilize the innings, forming a 37-run partnership for the third wicket. The former was dismissed for 17 runs by Lizaad Williams on the third ball of the ninth over. On the very next delivery, Williams also removed wicketkeeper Stephen Doheny for a golden duck.

Tector departed shortly after, scoring 20 runs off 28 balls, including two boundaries. Tector’s wicket left Ireland in a precarious position at 50/5 after 9.5 overs. At the time of writing, Ireland were 90/7 after 19 overs, needing 254 runs to win, with Andy McBrine (4) and Gavin Hoey (4) at the crease.
