How Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli performed in the 1st Test against Bangladesh in Chennai
The Chennai Test between India and Bangladesh marked the red-ball comeback of Pant in international cricket. Incidentally, before the Chepauk contest, he had last played a Test for India against Bangladesh in Mirpur in December 2022, a few days before his horrific car accident.
The left-hander made an amazing return to the format, batting as if he had never gone away from Test cricket. The 26-year-old contributed a crucial 39 off 52 in the first innings, hitting six fours, after India had lost three early wickets.
In the second innings, Pant smashed 109 off 128, with the aid of 13 fours and four sixes. He again came in with India having lost early wickets and added 167 for the fourth wicket with Shubman Gill (119*). The left-hander's ton was his sixth three-figure score in Test cricket, bringing him level with his idol MS Dhoni.
Meanwhile, Kohli had a poor Test. He was dismissed for a run-a-ball six in the first innings. The right-handed batter chased a delivery outside off from pacer Hasan Mahmud and was caught behind.
In the second innings, he was trapped leg before by off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 17 off 37. Kohli just seemed to be getting into his groove, when he attempted a flick off Mehidy Hasan but ended up being struck on the front foot. The Indian batter could have survived had he taken the DRS, as replays showed that he had hit the ball, but Kohli decided against doing so.
