On Sunday, August 4, the protestors wreaked havoc by burning several places, including the house of a former cricketer-turned-politician Mashrafe Mortaza, reported Dhaka Tribune. As per reports, they also broke into the prime minister's residence after she left the country.
According to Reuters, several hundreds were killed and thousands injured in the violence touched off by student groups protesting against quotas in government jobs. Bangladesh’s army chief will meet student protest leaders before forming a new interim government.
The protests came to light weeks before the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled in Bangladesh in October. As per ESPNcricinfo, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is closely monitoring the situation with backup options in India, Sri Lanka, and the UAE.
Virat Kohli to be next in action in IND vs SL ODI series decider
Virat Kohli will next be seen in action in the third and final ODI between India and Sri Lanka at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, August 7. The ace batter will be looking to make amends after scores of 24 and 14 in his first two outings against the islanders. He fell to spinners on both occasions as the Men in Blue failed to win any game. The opening game was tied while Team India lost the second fixture by 32 runs.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali feels that Kohli is out of practice, which led to his LBW dismissals in the two games. He said on his YouTube channel (via Hindustan Times):
"A great batsman like Virat Kohli, the world's number one batsman, has been out LBW twice. It's understandable if it happens to Iyer or Dube, but Virat Kohli is Virat Kohli. This means that he is not in practice."
Notably, Kohli is on the verge of completing 27,000 runs in international cricket. The Delhi batter needs 78 runs to achieve the landmark. The 35-year-old is only behind Ricky Ponting (27,483), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016) and Sachin Tendulkar (34,357).
The senior batter can also become the fastest to 14,000 runs in ODIs by scoring 114 runs. Kohli has 13,886 runs in 282 innings. Tendulkar and Sangakkara achieved the milestone in 350 and 378 innings, respectively.
