[Watch] "Woh pitch mere liye bahut yeh tha" - Rohit Sharma's hilarious reply to PM Narendra Modi on his unique gesture after T20 World Cup 2024 final
Team India skipper Rohit Sharma opened up on his unique gesture of eating the grass from the Barbados pitch following their victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the 37-year-old about the idea behind it and the veteran cricketer gave a hilarious response.
Rohit, along with the likes of Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli, were visibly emotional after the Men in Blue broke their 11-year ICC trophy drought. Rohit proceeded to eat the grass from the pitch, similar to 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic's tradition at Wimbledon.
PM Modi was also curious about the Indian captain's unique gesture. In reply, the skipper gave his hilarious trademark vague answer by saying:
"Woh pitch mere liye bahut yeh tha.... Jo bhi humne kiya us pitch pe kiya toh. Bas us moment pe woh ho gaya mere se." (Whatever we did on that pitch that day, the gesture just came out from me.)
The right-handed batter also recalled how India had failed in their pursuit of lifting multiple ICC trophies recently.
"We played on that pitch and won. We waited for a long time and failed on many occasions despite coming close to the trophy before."
Team India's final against the Proteas turned out to be a nail-biter after India set 176 to win. South Africa were in the game for most of the run-chase, but had a meltdown of epic proportions, failing to get 30 off the final 30 deliveries with six wickets in hand.
Rohit Sharma joined Virat Kohli in retiring from T20Is after Team India's World Cup win
With Rohit winning his first ICC trophy as a captain, he bid goodbye to T20I cricket, joining Virat Kohli, who announced the same moments after the final.
Rohit retired from T20I cricket as the highest run-getter with 4231 runs in 159 fixtures and finished T20 World Cup 2024 as the second-highest run-getter with 257 runs.
The Men in Blue had a grand celebration in Mumbai on Thursday, July 4, headlined by a victory parade, which was followed by a felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium.
