"I hope she stays strong" - Irfan Pathan on Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from wrestling final at Paris Olympics 2024

India's ace grappler Vinesh Phogat scripted history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for an Olympics final. She achieved the feat by beating Cuba's Guzman Lopez in the semifinal of 50kg freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024.

However, she was disqualified ahead of her final bout for being around 100 grams overweight. Reacting to Phogat's exit, Irfan Pathan mentioned that as a sportsperson, he knows what the 29-year-old would be going through.

Pathan wrote on the microblogging platform X:

"As a sportsman I can totally empathise what @Phogat_Vinesh must be feeling right now. I hope she stays strong."

Pathan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in January 2020. He played 120 ODIs, 29 Tests, and 24 T20Is. The left-arm spinner finished his international career with 301 wickets across formats. With the bat, he amassed 2,821 runs.

The seasoned campaigner continues to ply his trade in T20 leagues featuring retired cricketers. Pathan was part of the India Champions' squad in their title-winning campaign at World Championship of Legends 2024 last month.
