“We share a great camaraderie from the past” - Shreyas Iyer on reuniting with Aussie legend at Punjab Kings for IPL 2025

India batter Shreyas Iyer has opened up on reuniting with former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings. The duo previously worked together at the Delhi Capitals.

Iyer led the Delhi-based side in the 2019 and 2020 IPLs, while Ponting served as the head coach. Together, they helped Delhi Capitals qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2012 and then a year later, helped them get to their first-ever IPL final.

Post that, Iyer was released by the franchise in 2022 with Ponting also leaving after the 2024 season. Earlier this year, the Australian was appointed as the head coach of the Punjab Kings. Iyer, on the other hand, was released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) following a title-winning season. Subsequently, Punjab Kings splurged ₹26.75 crore to acquire his services.

The batter has now expressed his excitement to work with Ricky Ponting again. He said in a video uploaded by the Punjab-based franchise:

"It has been a great year for me personally winning four trophies this season and my main goal will be to win the IPL for Punjab. I can understand what the feeling must be among the fans. But with Ricky coming in, we share a great camaraderie from the past and we would be putting our thinking cap on and brainstorming on many aspects. Hopefully, we will be able to deliver from Match One. "

"Surreal feeling after winning the SMAT. Lot of hard work behind the scenes we have put in and the boys were tremendous with the performance. Now we are done with this part. Moving on to the next big thing which is the IPL in the coming months. Super excited to be a part of the Punjab Kings. Can't wait to join the Punjab Kings family"
