"We've seen this movie before" - Ricky Ponting takes dig at Matthew Potts for allegedly trying to waste time in ENG vs AUS 2024 5th ODI
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was unimpressed by England strike bowler Matthew Potts during the fifth and final ODI in Bristol on Sunday. The right-arm seamer called for new boots during the 18th over, prompting Ponting to indirectly accuse him of wasting time.
The incident occurred when 14 deliveries were still left for the 20-over mark, which is the minimum required for a result. Potts, who was bowling the 18th over, took off his shoe and sock amid the over and demanded new boots. Australia were well above the DLS par score, and rain was expected.
Ponting, commentating from the Sky Sports commentary box, claimed, as quoted by Fox Cricket:
"We’ve seen this movie before. This is getting funnier by the minute. We can see that there’s nothing wrong with the boot."
The fifth ODI was the series decider, as Australia won the first two matches before England bounced back to win the next two.
Matthew Potts dismisses Matt Short; Australia take series
Matthew Potts sent down seven overs on Sunday and dismissed the destructive Matt Short, who smacked a 30-ball 58. Chasing 310, Short and Travis Head got the tourists off to an electrifying start with a 78-run opening stand in 7.1 overs.
Australia reached a comfortable score of 165/2 in 20.4 overs and were 49 runs ahead of the DLS par score. The players walked off after that and didn't return. The match was eventually called off, with Australia emerging victorious.
Earlier, Steven Smith had won the toss and elected to field first. Ben Duckett and Harry Brook were destructive, with the former scoring a ton. Nevertheless, the hosts collapsed from 202-2 to 238-6. A few mini partnerships propelled England to 309 in 49.2 overs.
