"We will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy" - Jay Shah confirms Rohit Sharma as Team India captain for next two ICC events

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed Rohit Sharma as the captain in the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship (WTC) final. He expressed confidence in the veteran opener to bring both the trophies back home.

Rohit tasted his first big success as a skipper, helping India break their 11-year trophy drought by captaining them to T20 World Cup 2024. It came after the sub-continent giants lost the WTC and the 50-over World Cup final in 2023.

Speaking in a BCCI video, Jay Shah took pride in India lifting the T20 World Cup this year as he promised earlier in 2024. As quoted by News18, he claimed:

"I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy. This was our third final within a year. On June 11 last year, we lost the WTC final. On November 19 after winning 10 matches, we won hearts but failed to win the ODI World Cup. But as I had said earlier this year in Rajkot, India proceeded to win hearts and the World Cup under Rohit’s leadership."

The BCCI planned grand celebrations for the victorious side, starting with the contingent visiting Narendra Modi in Delhi. Later, they had a victory parade in Mumbai, followed by a presentation at the Wankhede Stadium.

The BCCI Secretary made special mentions to Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya for their contributions in the closing moments of the final against South Africa. Shah added:

"I congratulate Team India for this historic win. I want to dedicate this win to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. The last five overs proved pivotal to the win. And for that, I want to thank Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya."

With Pakistan slated to host the Champions Trophy in 2025, it remains to be seen if Team India will travel there.
