What happened on Day 1 of the 1st IND vs BAN 2024 Test?
Ravichandran Ashwin (102* off 112) and Ravindra Jadeja (86* off 117) featured in a brilliant seventh-wicket partnership of 195* as India recovered from a precarious 144-6 to reach 339-6 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, September 19. Ashwin notched up his sixth Test ton and second in consecutive Tests at Chepauk.
Bangladesh bowled first after winning the toss and dominated the first two sessions. The post-tea session, though, belonged to Ashwin and Jadeja as the visitors looked lost for ideas. The former showed intent from the time he walked out to the middle, easing the pressure on his partner.
Early in the last session, Jadeja pulled Hasan Mahmud for a six and set the tone for the rest of the day. Both batters eased past their respective half-centuries. Ashwin brought up India's 300 in style, dancing down the track and launching Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a maximum. The 38-year-old reached his sixth Test ton in the 78th over of the day, working Shakib Al Hasan through midwicket for a single.
Both Ashwin and Jadeja ended the day with 10 fours and two sixes each to their name. The duo added 163 runs in the last session of play, engineering a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.
Mahmud strikes key blows for Bangladesh
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh got off to a great start, reducing India to 34-3 inside 10 overs. On a surface where there was enough for the pacers in the morning session, Mahmud got three big scalps. He had Indian captain Rohit Sharma (6) caught in the slip cordon with a good length ball that seamed away. Shubman Gill (0) was caught down leg, while Virat Kohli (6) poked at one outside off.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and comeback man Rishabh Pant then put up a resistance as India went to lunch at 88-3. The latter was, however, dismissed early in the second session for 39. A lapse in concentration saw him nick one to the keeper off Mahmud, attempting a half-hearted cut.
Jaiswal showed good resolve, curbing his natural instincts, to bring up a fighting fifty. However, he could not convert the knock into a big one and was dismissed for 56 off 118 balls, fending a pacy, hard-length delivery from Nahid Rana to first slip. KL Rahul, playing his first Test since January, looked rusty and fell for 16 off 52, giving a catch to short leg off Mehidy Hasan.
