What happened on Day 2 of the 1st IND vs BAN 2024 Test?
India continued their domination over Bangladesh on Day 2 of the second Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, September 20. Resuming their first innings on 339-6, they were bowled out for 376. Jasprit Bumrah then claimed 4-50 in 11 overs as Bangladesh were knocked over for a paltry 149 in 47.1 overs. India went to stumps on Day 2 at 81-3 with an overall lead of 308 runs.
India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (5) cheaply for the second time in the Test match. He again nicked a probing delivery outside off - Taskin Ahmed being the bowler this time. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for 10 in the second innings, nicking a full ball from Nahid Rana that angled away.
Virat Kohli (17) was adjudged lbw to Mehidy Hasan Miraz as he tried to flick one. The batter did not review the decision, but replays showed a spike on UltraEdge. Luckily for India, there was no further damage. At the close of play, Shubman Gill was batting on 33 and Rishabh Pant on 12.
Day 2 in Chennai did not begin on a great note for the hosts. Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for his overnight score of 86, as he poked at one angled across from Taskin. Ravichandran Ashwin's knock ended on 113 as he looked to up the ante. Hasan Mahmud then dismissed Bumrah to complete a memorable five-fer.
Bumrah 4-fer puts Bangladesh on the back foot
Bangladesh would have been pleased to restrict India to under 380. The visitors, though, came up with an inept batting effort that left them in big trouble. Shadman Islam (2) was bowled by Bumrah as he shouldered arms to one from around the wicket.
Akash Deep then knocked over Zakir Hasan (3) and Mominul Haque (0) off consecutive deliveries. Bangladesh went to lunch on Day 2 in Chennai at a precarious 26-3.
Team India kept striking key blows in the post-lunch session as well. Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (20) edged a wobble-seam delivery from Mohammed Siraj that nipped away. Bumrah then produced another beauty to have Mushfiqur Rahim (8) caught at second slip. The wicket left Bangladesh in a huge strife at 40-5.
Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das added 51 for the sixth wicket, but the latter was dismissed for 22, top-edging a sweep off Jadeja. Shakib (32) fell soon after, in a somewhat unlucky fashion, as he reverse-swept a delivery from Jadeja onto his boot and ended up being caught by the keeper. Mehidy Hasan (27*) offered some resistance to ensure the visitors got close to 150.
