What happened on Day 2 of the 3rd IND vs NZ 2024 Test?

Team India reduced New Zealand 171-9 in their second innings on Day 2 of the third Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, November 2. The visitors have a lead of 143 runs and will look to stretch it as much as possible on Sunday. Earlier, India were bowled out for 263 in their first innings as a total of 15 wickets fell on another day dominated by spinners.

After India gained a slender lead of 28 runs, pacer Akash Deep got the hosts off to a brilliant start in the second innings, knocking over opposition skipper Tom Latham (1) with a full delivery that nipped back in off the seam. Spinners Ravindra Jadeja (4-52) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3-63) then came to the party.

Before India's seasoned spin duo took over, Washington Sundar ended Devon Conway's stay for 22 as the Kiwi left-hander edged a sharply turning delivery to gully. Ashwin then had Rachin Ravindra (4) stumped as the left-hander charged down the pitch and was completely beaten.

Will Young and Daryl Mitchell added 50 runs for the fourth wicket, but the latter perished to Jadeja for 21, trying to attack the left-arm spinner. Ashwin, running back from mid-on, completed a brilliant catch. The Kiwis lost half their side for 100 when Tom Blundell (4) was bowled by a slider from Jadeja.

Glenn Phillips came in and counter-attacked the Indian spinners. He slammed one four and three sixes in his 26 off 14 balls. Phillips' entertaining stay ended when Ashwin foxed him with a carrom ball and cleaned him up. Ish Sodhi (8) chipped a simple catch to short cover off Jadeja.

Young's fighting knock ended for 51 as he chipped a return catch off another carrom ball from Ashwin. Matt Henry (10) and Ajaz Patel (7*) featured in a handy eighth-wicket stand of 21 before Jadeja knocked over Henry with a peach that also brought an end to the second day's play in Mumbai.

Shubman Gill's 90 gives India lead on Day 2 of 3 IND vs NZ 2024 Test

Earlier, India resumed their first innings on 86-4 and ended up posting 263. Shubman Gill, who was unbeaten on 31 overnight, ended up top-scoring for the hosts with 90. He added 96 runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant, who once again impressed with 60 off 59 balls.

Batting in his usual aggressive style, Pant hammered eight fours and two sixes before being trapped leg-before by Sodhi with a skidder. Phillips again chipped in with the ball, having Jadeja (14) caught at slip. Ajaz picked up the next three wickets to complete a five-fer at the same venue where he claimed all 10 wickets in an innings during New Zealand's previous visit to India.

Sarfaraz Khan (0) gloved one from the left-arm spinner to the keeper. Gill was beaten in flight and edged one to slip, missing out on a hundred. Ashwin (6) also edged one that turned and bounced to slip. Sundar's (38* off 36) crucial knock ensured India took the lead. The innings ended with the run out of Akash Deep (0).
