What happened on Day 4 of the 1st IND vs BAN 2024 Test?

India completed the formalities on Day 4 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 22, to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Resuming their second innings on 158-4 in a chase of 515, the visitors were bowled out for 234 as India registered victory by 280 runs.

Overnight batters Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan offered some resistance in the first hour of play, taking the team total past the 190-run mark. However, once the stand was broken, Team India ran through the rest of Bangladesh batting line-up without much trouble.

Bangladesh skipper Shanto and Shakib added 48 for the fifth wicket before local boy Ravichandran Ashwin (6-88) provided the breakthrough, having Shakib (25) caught at backward short leg in his very first over of the day. Litton Das (1) never looked comfortable out in the middle during his 10-ball stay and nicked Ravindra Jadeja (3-58) to Rohit Sharma at first slip.

Ashwin then completed yet another five-fer in Test cricket as Mehidy Hasan Miraz (8) charged down the track and miscued a tossed-up delivery to long-on. Bangladesh captain Shanto's resistance ended for 82 off 127 balls as he tried to hit out against Jadeja's left-arm spin, but only managed a top-edge, which went towards the right of extra cover.

Ashwin and Jadeja also combined to pick up the last two wickets as India completed a brilliant fightback after having been reduced to 144-6 on Day 1 of the Test match. Taskin Ahmed (5) tried to go after Ashwin, but only managed to drag his stroke as far as mid-on. The winning moment came when Hasan Mahmud (7) tried to take on Jadeja, but was knocked over.
