What happened on Day 4 of the 2nd IND vs BAN 2024 Test?
India came out all guns blazing with the bat on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park in Kanpur on Monday, September 30, in an endeavor to push for a win. After two days of the Test match were completely washed out, a full day's play was finally possible on Monday.
Responding to Bangladesh's first-innings total of 233, India declared having made 285-9 in just 34.4 overs. Bangladesh went to stumps on Day 4 in their second innings at 26-2. Ravichandran Ashwin trapped Zakir Hasan (10) lbw with a delivery that straightened after pitching and knocked over nightwatchman Hasan Mahmud (4) as the Bangladesh pacer swung at one and missed.
Earlier, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma came out with the intent to hit every ball for a boundary and ended up racing to 55 in 3.5 overs. The entertaining stand ended when Rohit (23 off 11) was knocked over by a tossed-up delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz that came back in.
Jaiswal carried on and ensured India did not lose momentum even after the skipper's departure. The southpaw added 72 for the second wicket with Shubman Gill. During the partnership, India also broke the record for the fastest team hundred in Test matches, getting there in only 10.1 overs.
Jaiswal clobbered 12 fours and two sixes in his blazing knock. He looked good for a three-figure score but was bowled by Mahmud for 72 off 51 balls. He tried to defend a delivery from around the wicket that kept low but could not prevent the ball from hitting the stumps. Gill contributed 39 off 36, perishing in his endeavor to take on Shakib Al Hasan.
Rishabh Pant was promoted to No. 4, but fell for nine, miscuing a slog off Shakib. Virat Kohli (47) and KL Rahul (68 off 43) then added 87 for the fifth wicket to boost India's chances of declaration. Kohli became the fastest batter to complete 27,000 international runs. He too perished to Shakib, trying to swipe a tossed-up delivery.
Even as Ravindra Jadeja (8) and Ashwin (1) perished cheaply, Rahul kept finding the boundaries with ease. He struck seven fours and two sixes before being stumped off Mehidy Hasan.
Indian bowlers combine to restrict Bangladesh
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh resumed their first innings at 107-3. Mominul Haque, who was unbeaten on 40 at stumps on Day 1, scored a fine century and remained unbeaten on 107. However, the Indian bowlers kept striking at the other end.
Jasprit Bumrah (3-50) knocked over Mushfiqur Rahim for 11 as the batter erred in judgment and offered no stroke. Litton Das (13) perished to a one-handed stunner from Rohit at mid-off off Mohammed Siraj's (2-57) bowling. Another brilliant catch from Siraj saw Shakib (9) perish to Ashwin (2-45). Jadeja ended the innings with a caught and bowled of Khaled Ahmed (0), also completing 300 Test scalps.
