What happened on Day 5 of the 1st IND vs NZ 2024 Test?
New Zealand beat India by eight wickets on Day 5 of the first Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, October 20. With the triumph, the Kiwis registered their first Test win in India since 1988 and only their third in the country in red-ball cricket. New Zealand's first Test win in India was registered in 1969, when they beat the hosts by 167 runs in Nagpur.
Needing to chase a target of 107 on Day 5 in Bengaluru, New Zealand got home in 27.4 overs. Jasprit Bumrah gave Team India faint hopes when he dismissed the Kiwi openers cheaply, but in the end, the hosts just did not have enough runs on the board to defend as the visiting side cruised to a famous win.
Bumrah trapped opposition skipper Tom Latham (0) leg before in the first over of play, with an inswinger that also seamed and beat the New Zealand opener's inside edge. The Indian pacer produced another brute to dismiss Devon Conway lbw for 17. This time, the ball angled and moved away after pitching. The delivery beat Conway's outside edge, hitting him on the back pad in front of the stumps.
Will Young, Rachin Ravindra guide New Zealand to famous win over India
Having reduced New Zealand to 35-2, India would have had hopes of pulling off a near-miraculous win. However, the Kiwi duo of Will Young (48*) and Rachin Ravindra (39*) ensured that nothing of that sort happened, adding an unbroken 75 for the third wicket.
Coming in after Conway's dismissal, Ravindra got underway with two fours off Bumrah. In the next over, Young swept Ravindra Jadeja for a four and square drove the next ball for another boundary. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav was introduced in the 19th over of New Zealand's second innings and Young slammed the last ball for a six over midwicket.
In Kuldeep's next over, Ravindra helped himself to two fours. The winning runs came off Jadeja's bowling as Young cut a short and wide delivery past short third man and found the boundary. Ravindra was named the Player of the Match in the Bengaluru Test for his scores of 134 and 39*.
