What happened on Day 5 of the 2nd IND vs BAN 2024 Test?
India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets on Day 5 of the second Test at Green Park in Kanpur on Tuesday, October 1. Despite two full days being lost to the weather, the hosts registered an easy win inside two sessions on Day 5.
Bangladesh resumed their second innings at 26-2 and came up with a poor batting effort to be bowled out for 146 in 47 overs. India then chased down the 95-run target in just 17.2 overs to complete a 2-0 clean sweep in the series.
India's bowlers were on the money from the word go on Day 5. Mominul Haque (2) perished early, caught at leg-slip off Ravichandran Ashwin (3-50) while attempting a sweep. Opener Shadman Islam and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto added 55 runs for the fourth wicket to lift Bangladesh's hopes of saving the Test match.
Shanto, however, played an ill-advised reverse sweep and was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja (3-34) for 19. The wicket also sparked a batting collapse. Shadman (50) fell immediately after reaching his half-century, guiding a full and wide delivery from Akash Deep to gully. Jadeja then had Litton Das (1) caught behind as the Bangladesh batter gloved a delivery with some extra bounce to the keeper.
Jadeja had three wickets in three overs when Shakib Al Hasan (0) chipped a simple return catch to the Indian left-arm spinner. With the dismissal, Bangladesh had crumbled to 94-7. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (9) was the next to go, nicking a probing delivery from Jasprit Bumrah (3-17) that angled in and straightened.
Taijul Islam (0) also fell to the guile of Bumrah, trapped leg before by a slower ball. Mushfiqur Rahim hung around for his 37 but perished to the last ball before lunch. He too was undone by a Bumrah off-cutter as he attempted a booming drive.
Jaiswal leads India's chase of 95 against Bangladesh
Chasing 95, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma for 8 as he swept Mehidy Hasan to long-leg. Shubman Gill (6) was then trapped leg before by the off-spinner with one that turned in sharply. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 off 45) and Virat Kohli (29* off 37) added 58 for the third wicket to ease India's path to victory.
Jaiswal notched up his second fifty of the Test, smashing eight fours and one six. He perished to Taijul Islam, attempting a glory stroke, with India at the doorsteps of victory. Rishabh Pant (4*) hit the winning runs, lofting Taijul for a four over mid-on.
