Ruturaj Gaikwad's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on KL Rahul's Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 39 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday (April 23). The two teams have won four out of the first seven games and are placed fourth and fifth based on net run rate (NRR) in the points table.
In head-to-head battles, Chennai and Lucknow have faced off four times in the T20 league, with the Super Giants leading 2-1. One match ended in a no result.
The two teams recently locked horns at Lucknow's Ekana Cricket Stadium, where the hosts won the game by eight wickets.
Asked to bat first, defending champions CSK posted 176/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The Super Kings got off to a poor start as Mohsin Khan cleaned up Rachin Ravindra for a golden duck. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also departed for just 17 runs off 13 balls, caught behind by KL Rahul off Yash Thakur.
Ajinkya Rahane chipped in with 36 off 24 deliveries with the help of one six and five boundaries. LSG then fought back with quick wickets as Shivam Dube and Sameer Rizvi departed for single-digit scores.
Ravindra Jadeja, though, starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 57 off 40, including one six and five boundaries. Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni provided the late flourish by scoring 30 (20) and 28*(9), respectively.
Krunal Pandya starred with the ball for Lucknow by returning with exceptional figures of 2/16 in his three overs. Mohsin Khan, Yash Thakur, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi bagged one wicket each.
LSG chased down 177 against CSK in just 19 overs in IPL 2024 encounter
In response, LSG achieved the target with one over to spare. KL Rahul led from the front, scoring 82 off 53 in an innings laced with three sixes and nine boundaries. Quinton de Kock also scored 54 off 43, hitting a six and five boundaries. The duo shared a 134-run partnership for the opening wicket.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran and Stoinis stayed unbeaten on 23*(12) and eight off seven, respectively, to take the team past the finish line.
Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman scalped one wicket each for CSK.
