It was a big day for Suryakumar Yadav as well. He was named India's T20I captain for the series against Sri Lanka. He will be taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma after the veteran opener called it quits from the shortest format after winning the T20 World Cup 2024.
Suryakumar Yadav's childhood coach delighted to see the star batter being named captain
Suryakumar Yadav's childhood coach Ashok Aswalkar said it was a matter of pride for him that the star batter had been named the T20I captain of the Men in Blue. Aswalkar added that he knew something good was coming Suryakumar's way and that he had messaged the star batter about the same earlier on Thursday.
Here's what the coach said (via The Times of India):
"I had messaged him in the afternoon saying that you would get a big message today, and in the evening, when we heard the news, I felt very proud... I feel very happy. Captaincy is a slightly different role. He played in the World Cup 2024 with great players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. By playing with such great cricketers, we get to learn a lot."
