When was the last time Rohit Sharma played a red-ball domestic game in India?
The Indian domestic season is returning and Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma might be featuring in it. According to Indian Express, he and Virat Kohli could play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with the four-team tournament set to start on September 5.
If Rohit decides to play, this would be his first red-ball domestic game in India in almost eight years. He last made such an appearance in the 2016 Duleep Trophy final for India Blue against India Red at the Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium in Greater Noida between September 10-14.
At that time, Rohit was not a regular in India's Test side and he and the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara were fighting for places in the first XI ahead of a series against New Zealand. India Blue, led by the now head coach Gautam Gambhir, declared for 693/6 in the first innings after electing to bat first.
Gambhir scored 94, Pujara put up a mammoth 256, Sheldon Jackson also scored 134 while Rohit could only contribute 30 (57) from number four, getting caught by Shikhar Dhawan off Amit Mishra's bowling.
India Red were bowled out for just 356 thanks to a Ravindra Jadeja fifer. Stuart Binny waged a lone war with the bat, scoring a fighting 98.
Rohit Sharma's last domestic red-ball game ended in a win
In the third innings, Rohit came to bat at a position higher and remained not out for 32 (75) as his team declared again for 179/5. The Yuvraj Singh-led India Red crumbled once again for 161, with Jadeja taking another fifer to punish them with a 355-run defeat.
Both Rohit and Pujara got into the team for the New Zealand Tests and performed well in the middle-order. The former struggled to find similar returns overseas though until India pushed him to open the innings a few years later -- from where he's yet to look back.
