Who will play who: What is the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final format?

All matches of Group 2 in the Super 8 concluded on Monday, June 24, with South Africa becoming the second team to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Defending champions England were the first to seal a semi-final berth.

South Africa’s unbeaten run in the tournament continued even in the Super 8 stage as they bagged victories against England, the USA, and the West Indies to finish on top of the Group 2 points table. England, with two wins and a lone loss, finished second with four points to their name.

As a result, South Africa will now play the team that finishes second in Group 1: Australia or Afghanistan. Meanwhile, England will square off against Group 1 table-toppers India. With three wins in three games of the Super 8 stage, India remained unbeaten and will now face England in their semi-final clash in what will be a re-match of the 2022 T20 World Cup semis.

What are the qualification scenarios in Super 8 Group 1?

With a win over Australia on Monday, June 24, India confirmed their semi-final berth. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the wrecker-in-chief for the Men in Blue with his 41-ball 92-run knock, notching up the fastest fifty by any captain in all T20 World Cups.

With their second consecutive defeat in the Super Eights, Australia find themselves in a fix, as they will now rely on the result of the clash between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, scheduled to be played on June 25, at 6:00 am IST.

Australia and Afghanistan are tied with two points on the points table, with the latter having one final chance of qualifying for the semi-final. Afghanistan's loss against Bangladesh would lead to Australia's qualification as the Men in Yellow are placed second with a better NRR.

It'll be a do-or-die match for the Rashid Khan-led team, as only a victory would help them survive in the tournament and make history by moving to the semi-final. Either Australia or Afghanistan will take up the last remaining spot, and face South Africa in the semi-final.

The first semi-final will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on June 27 at 6:00 AM IST. The second semi-final will be played in Guyana at the Providence Stadium at 8:00 PM IST on the same day.
