Who will qualify if today’s WI vs SA match is washed out in 2024 T20 World Cup?
The ongoing crucial 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 clash between South Africa and the West Indies has been interrupted by rain. The match has been halted after a few overs of play was conducted in the second innings at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday, June 23.
If no play is possible due to rain, which has been the case before at this venue during the Australia-Bangladesh fixture as well, then both teams will be awarded one point each. The DLS will not come into play as South Africa have not played out the minimum requirement of five overs in their innings.
That scenario benefits the unbeaten Proteas, as one point will be enough for them to not only qualify for the semi-finals but also to top the group. With wins over the United States of America (USA) and England recently, South Africa came into the clash against the West Indies with four points to their name.
Another point to their already existing tally takes them to five points while West Indies will have three points, as they lost to England earlier. The defending champions have already finished their Super 8 stage with four points and secured qualification for the semi-finals.
South Africa were placed at 15-2 after two overs during the run chase in the 2024 T20 World Cup
After electing to bat first, West Indies were comfortable at 86-2 at one stage after surviving a top-order collapse. However, they could only end up with 135-8 as South Africa used 12 overs of spin during the innings.
During the run chase, Andre Russell struck twice in the second over to hand early trouble to the Proteas. Skipper Aiden Markram was unbeaten on three runs off four deliveries just as the new batter was about to walk in. It was at this point that the players had to rush back in due to the rain.
According to sources at the venue, the target for South Africa if the clash is reduced to the minimum of five overs would be 48. However, the rain has currently stopped at the venue and conditions are looking positive for a full game of cricket in the final Group 2 Super 8 clash in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
