Why is Shreyanka Patil not playing today’s IND vs NZ 2024 3rd ODI?

Shreyanka Patil is absent from India's playing XI for the third and final ODI against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, October 29. She misses out due to shin splints after having been on the bench for the first couple of ODIs.

The off-spinner's last appearance came against Australia in the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on October 13. She was named in the squad for the ODI series against New Zealand after India failed to make it to the semi-finals.

She failed to make it to the playing XI across the first two matches of the series, with India going for a seam-heavy attack for the first match, and Priya Mishra making her debut in the next fixture.

"Ms Shreyanka Patil was unavailable for selection in the Third ODI due to shin splints. The BCCI Medical Team will closely monitor her progress," BCCI's statement read.

The women's team have had injury concerns of late. Spinner Asha Sobhana had injured herself during warmup ahead of the World Cup clash against Australia in Sharjah. In the first ODI against New Zealand, Harmanpreet Kaur was ruled out due to injury while Smriti Mandhana led the team.

The ongoing ODI series is of great importance to both sides as it marks the start of the roadmap to the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in India during the September-October window.

India won the series opener by 59 runs, courtesy of Deepti Sharma's all-round brilliance. The visitors bounced back with a 76-run win in the second match after skipper Sophie Devine's 79-run knock.

As far as the third match is concerned, New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bat first.
