The much-awaited Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 is set to take place from October 27 to December 1. The eight-team tournament will see a total of 43 matches take place across eight venues in Australia.
The last edition of the tournament saw the Adelaide Strikers defend their title in thrilling fashion. They posted a respectable 125 on the board against Brisbane Heat in the final and managed to secure a victory by three runs.
Notably, the auction took place on September 1, which changed the overall picture of the teams.
Smriti Mandhana (Adelaide Strikers), Nadine de Klerk (Brisbane Heat), Lizelle Lee (Hobart Hurricanes), Hayley Matthews (Melbourne Renegades), Marizanne Kapp (Melbourne Stars), Sophie Devine (Perth Scorchers), Amelia Kerr (Sydney Sixers) and Chamari Athapaththu (Sydney Thunder) were pre-signed by the franchises.
The likes of Danielle Wyatt, Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, Deandra Dottin and Laura Wolvaardt were the first-choice picks in the auction. Meanwhile, Shabnim Ismail and Chloe Tryon were the notable second-round picks.
The other two rounds saw franchises secure the services of players like Alice Capsey, Lizelle Lee, Orla Prendergast, and Nadine de Klerk.
Among the Indian players, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shikha Pandey, Hemalatha Dayalan, and Yastika Bhatia were signed in the draft. However, 13 other Indian players, including Harmanpreet Kaur, found no takers in the auction.
The WBBL 2024 season marks a change in the schedule, as the tournament has been revised to a 40-game regular season, with three additional playoff games. All eight teams will play 10 games each, while locking horns with three other teams twice in the league stage. The move has been aimed at ensuring players' availability throughout the season.
The first day (October 27) of WBBL 10 will see a triple-header, with Adelaide Strikers kicking off the tournament against Brisbane Heat.
