Yashasvi Jaiswal sets record for most sixes in a calendar year in Test history during the 2024-25 BGT 1st Test
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made history by becoming the player with the most sixes in a calendar year in Test cricket. He accomplished this feat on Day 2 of the 1st 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test, being played on Saturday, November 23, at Perth Stadium.
The landmark moment came on the fourth ball of the 52nd over of India’s second innings. Jaiswal danced down the pitch and sent the ball soaring over long-on for a 100-meter six off Nathan Lyon, taking his total to 34 sixes in 2024.
With this shot, he surpassed Brendon McCullum’s previous record of 33 sixes, which had stood since 2014.
Here’s a video of the moment:
England's Test captain Ben Stokes is third on the list, having struck 26 sixes in 2022. Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist is fourth with 22 sixes in 2005, and Virender Sehwag rounds out the list, also with 22 sixes, which he hit in 2008.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is enjoying a memorable year in Test cricket, having accumulated 1,208 runs in 23 innings at an average of 57.52, including two centuries and eight fifties.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul's unbeaten opening stand of 172 put India on top at stumps on Day 2
Although India were bowled out for 150 in the first innings, their bowlers were outstanding, reducing Australia to 67 for seven at stumps on Day 1.
The hosts added 37 runs in the morning session of Day 2 before Jasprit Bumrah took a five-wicket haul and Harshit Rana claimed the final two wickets, dismissing Australia for 104 and giving India a crucial 46-run lead.
In response, the Indian opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have come out firing, making history by becoming the first Indian duo to form a 100-run partnership for the opening stand in Australia since 2004.
At stumps on Day 2, India were 172 for no loss, with Jaiswal (90) and Rahul (62) at the crease, holding a lead of 218 runs.
