"You belong here" - Ravichandran Ashwin on Jasprit Bumrah becoming the number 1 ranked Test bowler

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has heaped praise on compatriot Jasprit Bumrah who became the number one ranked Test bowler in the latest ICC Men's Test rankings on Wednesday, October 2. The elated 38-year-old off-spinner took to his official Instagram handle and posted a story congratulating Bumrah.

Both Ashwin and Bumrah finished the two-match Test series against Bangladesh as the joint-highest wicket-takers with 11 scalps each. In addition to his performance with the cherry, the Chennai-based player also scored 114 runs which includes a century at his home ground - the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the first innings of the series opener. India won the Chennai Test by a massive margin of 280 runs to go 1-0 up.

Jasprit Bumrah picks up three wickets in each innings during the Kanpur Test

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur during the second Test match and voted to bowl first. Put into bat, the visitors managed 233 runs in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah was the chief tormentor with the ball, having picked up three wickets.

In reply, the hosts scored 285-9 in just 34.4 overs before declaring their innings. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul scored quick-fire half centuries, with Virat Kohli coming close to his fifty before getting dismissed for 47 runs off 35 balls.

Trailing India by 52 runs, Bangladesh began their second innings. Once again Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin starred with the ball, scalping three wickets each. Ravindra Jadeja too joined the party as he finished with figures of 3-34. Eventually, Najmul Hossain Shanto's men were bowled out for 146 runs.

Thereby, India, who needed just 95 runs to whitewash the series, chased down the target in 17.2 overs, claiming a seven-wicket victory in Kanpur.

The focus will now shift to the shortest format of the game as the two sides will be up against each other in three T20Is, beginning on Sunday, October 6, 2024, in Gwalior.
