"You rarely see him making a mistake after playing 20-25 balls in such conditions" - Ajay Jadeja on Virat Kohli's dismissal in IND vs BAN 1st Test
Ajay Jadeja was surprised by Virat Kohli's dismissal in India's second innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh. The cricketer-turned-commentator noted that Kohli rarely makes such mistakes after getting set in favorable batting conditions.
Kohli was dismissed after scoring 17 runs off 37 deliveries as India ended Day 2 at 81/3 in Chennai on Friday, September 20. The hosts have an overall lead of 308 runs, having bundled Bangladesh out for 149 in their first innings earlier in the day after themselves posting 376 in their first essay.
During a discussion on Colors Cineplex, Jadeja was asked about India losing three second-innings wickets.
"Virat Kohli getting out was probably the biggest surprise because you rarely see him making a mistake after playing 20-25 balls in such conditions. He made a mistake there, played slightly across. He is also human. Everyone makes mistakes. This is the start of the season maybe," he responded.
The former India opener added that Kohli not realizing that he got an inside edge was even more surprising.
"Forget everything else, when he himself didn't come to know that the ball had hit his bat, where the ball is going, is a far-away thought. Maybe the mind was somewhere else. If you see the ball, it neither spun nor kept low, but at times, you make a mistake even against straight balls, which is rare," Jadeja observed.
Kohli discussed with his partner Shubman Gill before opting not to take a review. Ultra-edge later suggested that the ball had taken the inside edge before hitting his pads.
"The question does not arise at all" - Aakash Chopra on whether Shubman Gill should have asked Virat Kohli to take the review
In the same discussion, Aakash Chopra was asked whether Shubman Gill erred in not asking Virat Kohli to take the review.
"The question does not arise at all. When the bat is in your hands and you have the DRS, you don't ask that question at all. You don't look anywhere else, you signal for the DRS and have a smirk on your face as well, that it is a bad decision. However, when you asked, it means you were just asking whether it was going straight or missing," he replied.
The cricketer-turned-commentator opined that Kohli potentially fell into the trap laid by the Bangladesh think-tank.
"Another interesting thing was that when Mehidy was bowling, there was no fielder at deep square leg for Virat Kohli. He hit a four off the previous delivery, a pull off the backfoot. The fielder was kept up because he doesn't play the sweep," Chopra explained.
"You generally play that ball straight but he wasn't getting a single or four there. So when he was looking to hit hard to find the gap as the square leg fielder was up, maybe that induced a mistake but it's a fact that he doesn't make such mistakes," he added.
Kohli's dismissal reduced India to 67/3. They had earlier lost Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal's wickets, but Gill (33* off 64) and Rishabh Pant (12* off 13) ensured that they didn't suffer any further blows.
