"You won only the toss and lost everything else" - Ajay Jadeja on India's 'disappointing' performance on Day 2 of IND vs NZ 2024 1st Test
Ajay Jadeja has noted that nothing apart from the toss went in India's favor on Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 17. He added that the batters would be the most disappointed with their performances.
India were bundled out for 46 after Rohit Sharma opted to bat first. New Zealand ended the day at 180/3, with a lead of 134 runs heading into the third morning.
Reviewing the day's play on Colors Cineplex, Jadeja pointed out that India dished out a disappointing performance, especially with the bat and in the field.
"If we see today's day, you won only the toss and lost everything else. The batting was probably the most disappointing. The team did what they could from their side in bowling. However, the fielding support was also missing. So the chances that came also slipped out of their hands," he said.
The former India captain added that the hosts might have endured their worst day in a long while.
"Such a day has come after a long time in Indian cricket, and that happens. You play almost 365 days, if you count your worst day among those, today might be that day. The scorecard shows it's a huge day in history. Whatever the Indian team wanted didn't happen today apart from winning the toss," Jadeja observed.
Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) were the only Indian players to reach double digits. Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were dismissed for ducks.
"Only Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant got out while defending or to balls you felt could dismiss you" - Ajay Jadeja
In the same discussion, Ajay Jadeja was asked whose dismissal he was most disappointed with.
"I will not talk about an individual. If something is there, it's the approach. Only Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, which is rare when we talk about Rishabh, got out while defending or to balls you felt could dismiss you. Apart from that, whether it was Sarfaraz Khan, Rohit Sharma or Yashasvi Jaiswal, the mode was attacking, which as a team you might be disappointed about," he responded.
The cricketer-turned-commentator added that none of the batters was willing to bide his time during the difficult period.
"When you won the toss and batted first, you also knew that you would have a few difficulties initially. Either you want to fight and pass that time, or the other approach is to go and attack so that you can change the opposition's mindset. We didn't get to see any batter willing to fight or struggle in a defensive way. This was aggressive fight but since that didn't work today, everything will look bad," Jadeja elaborated.
India's collapse started with Rohit Sharma's dismissal, with the skipper dancing down the track to a Tim Southee delivery, only to miss the ball and be bowled. While Sarfaraz Khan and Yashasvi Jaiswal lost their wickets while playing attacking shots, KL Rahul played a delivery down the leg side straight to Tom Blundell behind the wickets.
