Northampton beat Surrey to win their first T20 title

David Willey

David Willey was the star as he claimed a hat-trick to help Northamptonshire secure their first FLt20 title with a thumping 102-run victory over Surrey.

Due to rain delays, the match was reduced to 18 overs per side. Northants who batted first started strongly as David Willey smashed 60 off just 27 balls and then Cameron White and Alex Wakely put on an unbeaten 102 partnership to give Northants a formidable score of 194-2.

In reply, Surrey lost an early wicket as Jason Roy was bowled for 13. Surrey looked like they may be recovering but wickets were still falling frequently and with 70 runs on the board they were 5 wickets down and struggling to keep up with the required run rate.

Solanki then fell to make the score 72-6, Wilson scored a run-a-ball 14 to take the total to 92. But to eliminate any small chance of Surrey pulling it out of the bag, Willey stepped up to the plate and delivered some magic. He bowled superbly to get a hat-trick with the wickets of Ansari, Lewis and Tremlett.

This gave the underdogs Northants a comfortable win and their first one-day trophy in 21 years.
