I'm not sure we're going to be good friends after this - Warne jokes about Lee's beamer which broke his hand
Cricket fans around the world were robbed of a great opportunity on Saturday when Rest of the World XI skipper Shane Warne was unable to take field after beamer from his ex-teammate Brett Lee broke his hand.
When the greats of the game descended at Lord’s on Saturday to play a 50-over match to mark the historic cricket ground’s 200th anniversary, there were several individual battles of the previous decades that viewers expected to have a glimpse of. The biggest of them all was probably Sachin Tendulkar vs Shane Warne, but after all the build up, it failed to transpire on the field as Warne’s broken hand made him sit out in the second innings.
The first ball Warne faced in the first innings was a beamer which slipped out of Lee’s hand and hit him flush on the gloves. The pacer was quick to apologise, holding his hand up and asking if Warne was fine. But the damage had been done.
Warne later tweeted, expressing his utter disappointment at not being able to bowl in the memorable match which MCC won by 7 wickets.
Talking to Sky Sports after the match, Warne said about the incident, “It was nice of him to say hello, break my hand and put me out for six weeks.”
When asked whether it would affect his friendship with the pacer, Warne joked, “We were good mates but I'm not sure if we are going to be good friends after this. But really he didn't mean it.”
