Pakistan vs West Indies 2016, 3rd T20I Stats: Samuels' struggle and Wasim's collection
After suffering comprehensive defeats in the previous two matches, West Indies needed to lift themselves up if they were to salvage something from the wreckage. Kesrick Williams was handed an international debut while Chadwick Walton also got an opportunity even as Samuel Badree missed out due to a groin stiffness.
Having been sent into bat by Sarfraz Ahmed, their top-order spluttered yet again and slumped to 17/3. Imad Wasim continued his rich vein of form to push them onto the back foot. With the experienced Marlon Samuels struggling to time the ball on a two-paced surface, they grafted to a paltry total.
In contrast, Pakistan began strongly by finding the boundaries to carve away at the target. Despite losing a couple of quick wickets, they completed the chase in a canter to inflict a 3-0 whitewash on the World T20 holders.
Here are some interesting numbers from the 3rd T20I in Abu Dhabi.
0 – Maiden overs bowled by Dwayne Bravo in his T20I career. He has sent down over 170 overs from 66 matches in the shortest format and picked up 52 wickets at an average of 27.67.
2 – Boundaries conceded by Wasim across all three matches of this series. Interestingly, both were scored by Samuels (one in this match and another in the first T20I).
6 – Instances wherein a team has won all T20Is in a bilateral series comprising of 3 or more matches. This was Pakistan’s first such triumph and the last team to do it was India when they whitewashed Australia 3-0 earlier in the year.
9 – Wickets for Wasim in this series which is the joint-second most in a bilateral T20I series. Mohammad Hafeez with 7 wickets held the Pakistani record prior to him.
9 – Wasim now has the joint most wickets in a 3-match bilateral T20I series alongside Ravichandran Ashwin (against Sri Lanka) and David Wiese (against West Indies).
18 – Wickets for Pakistan’s left-arm bowlers (both pace and spin) which is the most for a team in a bilateral T20I series eclipsing Bangladesh who had 14 such scalps against Ireland in 2012.
18 – Overs bowled by Pakistan’s left-arm bowlers which are the most for any team in a T20I. Not surprisingly, they had held the previous record as well with 16 such overs in 3 different matches.
26 – Runs scored by West Indies from the Power Play overs which was their most in this series. However, the final total of 103 was also their lowest in this series.
53 – Runs conceded by Wasim across all three matches of this series. Both his average and economy rate in this series stands at an identical 4.41.
71 – Combined runs from West Indies during the Power Play overs of all three matches in this series. To put things into context, they had plundered 78 runs from the Power Play overs during the first T20I against India in Florida last month.
71.18 – Samuels’ strike-rate in this match (42 runs from 59 balls) which is the second lowest by a batsman facing 50 or more balls in a T20I. Scotland batsman Navdeep Singh Poonia holds the ignominious record with a strike-rate of 70.37.
103 – West Indies’ total in this match for the loss of five wickets which is the lowest in T20Is by any team batting out the entire 20 overs and losing five or fewer wickets. Incidentally, they had managed the previous lowest as well during their 113/5 against England in 2011.
