Reports: Peter Moores poised to be sacked as England coach

England head coach Peter Moores is reportedly set to face the axe sometime next week with former England skipper Andrew Strauss poised to replace Paul Downton as the new Director of Cricket. England have had a horrid run of late, getting eliminated from the World Cup in the group stages after an ignominious defeat at the hands of Bangladesh and only managing a 1-1 draw in the recent Test series against the West Indies.

Moores will, most likely, have to pay the price for failing to turn around the fortunes of English cricket since taking over last summer, especially with Strauss having been critical of Moores’ earlier tenure as coach in his autobiography last year.

If Moores does get the sack, former Australia fast bowler and current Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie is likely to be in pole position for the top job, owing to the tremendous work he has done with Yorkshire, the current county champions.

Ex-England opener and Sky Sports commentator Nick Knight, ahead of England’s ongoing match against Ireland, when asked whether he thinks England will have a new coach for their Test series against New Zealand starting on May 21, said: “Yes I do. I think Peter will move aside. I feel desperately sorry for Peter. The fact he's here today says a lot about him. He could have stayed at home, but he wants to be out there. He's desperately keen to be involved in this set-up.

"He genuinely feels that he is taking this team forward. I would have to disagree. With the results we've had, particularly with the World Cup and the series in West Indies, I feel there's some international pedigree missing from this England set-up, and I think Peter Moores should be moved aside.”
