Predicting the top 3 most expensive overseas buys of WPL 2025 Auction ft. Deandra Dottin
The third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) Auction will take place on December 15, in Bengaluru. All five teams announced their retentions earlier this year and released a few players to make space for new ones in their squad.
120 players will go under the hammer in a bid to find a place in one of the teams at the prestigious tournament. While a majority of that list is dominated by Indian players, some top overseas players too will be a part of the auction.
Let’s predict the top three most expensive overseas buys of the auction-
#3 Alana King
Australian spinner Alana King might go big at the upcoming WPL auction. Her consistent performances for the Australian side, and in the WBBL, speak volumes about her prowess with the ball.
The leggie, given her abilities, will do well on Indian pitches that are spin-friendly, and hence teams might look to add King to their squad. Notably, Alana King hasn’t played the WPL yet but was a part of the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2022, representing the Supernovas.
King is coming on the back of a very successful Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) campaign and finished the season as her career’s best so far. She picked up 20 wickets to emerge as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.
She also claimed top honors by receiving the Golden Arm award at the WBBL 2024.
#2 Lizelle Lee
South Africa’s Lizelle Lee might initiate a bidding war at the auction, thanks to her recent exploits with the bat. At the Women’s Big Bash League 2024, she etched her name in history books and claimed some top records.
Lee announced her retirement from international cricket at a very early stage in her career, in 2022, and since then has been showcasing her talent at franchise-based tournaments. Representing the Hobart Hurricanes in the recently concluded WBBL edition, Lee notched up back-to-back centuries, becoming the first-ever player to do so.
Apart from that, she now also holds the record for notching the highest individual score in the tournament’s history, achieving the feat with her 150*(75) against Perth Scorchers. In her next match against the Adelaide Strikers, Lee scored 103 off 59 deliveries to make it two tons in a row.
Lizelle Lee finished the season with 399 runs in 11 matches, getting to second on the list of players with the most runs in the 2024 edition. Given her recent performances, Lee is expected to garner huge bids at the WPL 2025 auction.
#1 Deandra Dottin
One of the leading factors behind the West Indies making it to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals, Deandra Dottin will be the overseas player to watch out for at the WPL Auction. The fiery batter, who came back from retirement, had a terrific outing at the global event.
She was terrific with both bat and the ball and put up some memorable performances. The Caribbean side made it to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup for the first time since 2016 and Dottin played a key role as an all-rounder.
While she played as a batter majorly, her bowling masterclass was on display in the semi-final clash against New Zealand. Before playing a 33-run knock, only for her team to end up on the losing side, Dottin picked up a four-wicket haul, registering 4/22 in her quota of four overs.
The aggressive batter’s style of play will do wonders for any team she plays for. Hence, all five teams will be on the lookout for the ‘World Boss.’
