Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award for Yuvraj Singh's cancer awareness initiative
The 2011 World Cup winning hero Yuvraj Singh’s cancer awareness initiative 'YouWeCan' was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award on August 29, 2014. The 32-year-old’s organization was awarded for "best charity" for its work in the field of cancer awareness.
PEHCHAN, an NGO working for the Girl Child and Empowerment of Women was behind this annual award ceremony and Arti Sehwag, wife of Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, whose dream project ‘Sehwag International School’ was chosen for “creating a world class school”, was also given the award.
The organisers also recognized Haryana’s twin sisters – Tashi and Nungshi Malik, who last year in May became the first twins to climb the Mount Everest.
Congress leaders Dr Karan Singh, Manish Tewari and Oscar Fernandes were present to give away the awards. PENCHAN, the initiative by a group of media professionals are honoring outstanding and inspirational personalities in the society every year since 2010 in the name of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi.
Pakistan journalist Reema Abbasi’s book "Historic Temples in Pakistan: A Call to Conscience" won her the "best literary personality" of the year award.
