Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Day 1 Round-Up: Deepak Hooda stars for Baroda; Wriddhiman Saha falters for Bengal

Deepak Hooda was the star with the bat for Baroda

Baroda got off to a great start on day 1 of the 4th round of fixtures of the Ranji Trophy.  Captain Deepak Hooda-led the way as he ended the day amassing  190 runs in 215 deliveries. By doing so, he became the first batsman this season to score 3 consecutive centuries. This is also the highest ever first-class score for Hooda, and he will be looking to reach his double century tomorrow morning.

The duo of Dhiren Mistry and Hooda put on a 178 run partnership for the 4th wicket after which Mistry was dismissed for 76.

Sandeep Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for Yuvraj Singh’ side as he took four wickets in 20 overs and conceded only 64 runs.

Delhi got off to a good start against Odisha as they end the first day 196 runs behind their opposition.  The Delhi bowlers ripped through Odisha’s top order, but a 141 run partnership for the 6th wicket between Subhransu Senapati and Biplab Samantaray led to Odisha reaching a total of 237 in 77 overs.

Varun Sood, Manan Sharma, and Sumit Narwal picked up a combined total of 7 wickets amongst themselves. Ishant Sharma managed to take just the 1 wicket of Senapati.

Delhi got off to a brisk start as the ended the day with 43 runs on the board with Gautam Gambhir and Unmukt Chand at the crease.

Karnataka’s Sreenath Arvind continues his good form as he picked up a 5 wicket haul on the first day to restrict Assam to 268 with the loss of 6 wickets. Amit Verma led the way for Assam as he remains not out on 125 at stumps.

Arvind ran riot at the beginning of the innings, and Assam were struggling at 16/3 at one stage but managed to revive their innings thanks to Verma’s century along with a well-crafted half-century by Sarupam Purkayastha.

After both their openers got out for a duck, Tamil Nadu managed to revive their innings with worthy contributions from the middle order.

Former India wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik fell agonisingly short of a century as he was dismissed for 95. Kaushik Gandhi who remains unbeaten on 71, and Vijay Shankar chipped in and helped keep the scoreboard ticking.

Madhya Pradesh tried out 7 different bowlers, out of which only 3 of them managed to pick up wickets. Chandrakant Sakure took two, while Ashwin Das and Ishwar Pandey took one each.

In a bowling friendly pitch, Bengal seem to have the upper hand against Railways on a day which saw the loss of 15 wickets.

Bengal were dismissed for 205 in their first innings with Railways’s Anureet Singh being the pick of the bowlers as he took 4 wickets.

Madhya Pradesh began their innings in poor fashion as they ended the day with 37 runs on the board and with the loss of 4 wickets. Ashoke Dinda picked up two wickets while Amit Kuila and Sayan Ghosh picked up a wicket each.
