Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Day 3 Round-Up: Rana Dutta creates history for Tripura

The third day of Round 3 in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy saw a lop-sided contest between Delhi and Karnataka come to an end, with Karnataka winnings by an innings and 160 runs. Although there were no visible demons on the pitch, the game ended in two and a half days with Karun Nair and his men registering a huge win.

Delhi, who were bundled out for a paltry 90 in their first innings, failed to put up a show in the second innings as well, getting all out on 160 on Day 3. Ishant Sharma and Gautam Gambhir failed to make an impact for Delhi, with Ishant taking just one wicket in his 21 overs, and Gambhir getting out on 0 and 2 in his two innings. 

Delhi 90 and 164 lost to Karnataka 414 by an innings and 160 runs.

In Dharamsala, Abhinav Mukund posted a fine 154 for Tamil Nadu, in their quest to cross Uttar Pradesh’s score of 524 in the first innings. They would be looking to take the first innings lead, and get the crucial four points.

In a Group C game in Kalyani, Rana Dutta of Tripura took a hat-trick, the first this season, and he went on to take six wickets. His superb display gave Tripura a strong hold in the game, as Himachal Pradesh was asked to follow on.

In a crucial Group A game played at Bilaspur, Bengal took the upper hand against Punjab as they bowled out Yuvraj Singh’s men for 271, and ended day 3 at 182 for 5, with a lead of 315. Ashok Dinda was the star for Bengal, taking five wickets for his side.

Mumbai are in a spot of bother against Madhya Pradesh in a Group A match in Raipur. They have lost half their side and still trailing MP by 155 runs at the end of day 3. With an outright result unlikely, they will have to show stubborn resistance to walk away with a first innings lead.

In another Group A match, Gujarat are on top against Railways. Having set Railways a target of 501, they have already taken four wickets, and look good to win the match on day 4.

In Group B, Maharashtra wasted a steady start and got all out for 182 in reply to Saurashtra’s 657 for 8 declared. For Saurashtra, Kushang Patel and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja took five wickets each. Maharashtra were asked to follow on and they ended day 3 at 114 with a loss of two wickets. The have lost their triple centurion from the, Swapnil Gugale, early on his innings.
