Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Day 2 Round-Up: Ashutosh creates history for Chhattisgarh, Yuvraj fails for Punjab

The second day of the 2016-17 season of Ranji Trophy saw defending champions, Mumbai, make a stunning comeback against Tamil Nadu. Mumbai were 85 for 4 at the end of day one after bowling out Tamil Nadu for a meager 87. Mumbai got all out for 176, after K Vignesh took a five-for on debut, giving Mumbai a lead of 89.

Tamil Nadu’s openers were batting well at 107 for no loss, but Mumbai fought back valiantly to take six wickets for just 43 runs, and now trail Tamil Nadu by 64 runs. An interesting finish seems to be on the cards for this marquee clash.

Railways ended up at 331 in their first innings, riding on the innings of Shivakant Shukla and Ashish Yadav, who scored 128 and 81 respectively. Punjab, in their reply, were struggling losing four wickets for 44 runs. Yuvraj Singh got out cheaply for Punjab, as MR Chaudhary got rid of him for just 9. Uday Kaul and Gurkeerat Mann recovered the innings for Punjab, taking them to 154 at the end of day two, trailing Railways by 177 runs.

In Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh found themselves struggling against Madhya Pradesh, losing 5 wickets for 131 in reply to Madhya Pradesh’s 465. UP lost half their side at 96, but Eklavya Dwivedi provided some resistance and took the total to 131 at the end of day’s play.

UP still trail MP by 334 runs with two days of play left. Earlier, MP scored a massive 465, lead by a superb double ton by Harpreet Singh.

Brief Scores: Uttar Pradesh 131/5 trail Madhya Pradesh by 334 runs

Delhi built their stronghold over Assam as they finished day two at 241 for 3 after bowling out Assam for just 193 in a group-B game played at Vadodara. Rishabh Pant and Nitish Rana are batting in the middle having scored a half-century each for Delhi.

Earlier Delhi bowled Assam out cheaply, riding on a three-for by Pradeep Sangwan. Delhi will be looking to take a huge first innings lead and take vital points by the end of the game.

Ashutosh Singh created history when he became the first centurion from the state of Chhattisgarh. In a group-C game against Tripura played at Ranchi, Ashutosh scored 140, taking the Ranji Trophy debutants to 255. Chhattisgarh lead Tripura by 127 runs as Tripura ended the play on day two at 10 for no loss. Chhattisgarh captain Mohammad Kaif got out cheaply, scoring only 27 runs.

Baroda declared at a massive total of 544 for 8, led by brilliant tons by Aditya Waghmode and Deepak Hooda. In their reply, Gujarat are 34 for no loss, trailing Baroda by 510 runs. India's ODI spinner Axar Patel bagged three wickets for Gujarat, while Jaspreet Bumrah got injured in the first innings.
