Ranji Trophy 2016-17: Seventh Round Day 2 Round-up; Baroda defeat Bengal in just two days
The second day of the seventh round of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season didn't go well for the national team openers Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan, as both failed to make a mark in their team's clash against Rajasthan. Priyank Panchal notched up a double century as Gujarat maintained a strong hold over Mumbai.
While there were a lot of individual performances to be talked about, Baroda clinched a thrilling victory against the Bengal team in Ch Bansi Lal cricket stadium in Rohtak. Here are the latest updates from the second day of the seventh round of play in the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season.
Gujarat 437 vs Mumbai 58/3
Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal struck a double century in KSCA Hubli stadium and powered his team to a mammoth total of 437 runs against the Mumbai team. Carrying on from where he had left on the first day, Priyank was well supported by the tail enders who showed a great deal of patience. Mumbai's Vishal Dabholkar had to work hard for his six wickets as he bowled close to 43 overs in the first innings.
The Mumbai team didn't get off to the type of start they would have wanted as they lost three quick wickets. Jasprit Bumrah struck early on in the innings as Mumbai ended the day at 58 for the loss of three wickets.
Rajasthan 238 and 19/1 vs Delhi 307
Having lost their key players, Shikhar Dhawan and Gautam Gambhir, early in the first innings much was rested on Delhi middle-order in Wayanad's Krishnagiri Stadium. Youngsters Rishab Pant and Milind Kumar were up for the challenge and battled hard for their knocks of 75 and 41 runs respectively.
While Milind played cautiously for his 41 runs, Rishab Pant chose his usual way of exploiting the bowlers. The left-hander made a quick-fire 75 which included 9 fours and 3 sixes. Rajasthan's Tanveer-ul-Har, Mahipal Lomror and Pankaj Singh picked three wickets each as Delhi were all-out for 307 in their first innings.
The Rajasthan team got off to a terrible start in their second innings as they lost their opener Manender Narender Singh in just the ninth over. The team ended the day's play at 19 runs for the loss of one wicket.
Odisha 318/9 vs Karnataka 179
Having restricted Karnataka to a modest total of 179, Odisha had their noses in front coming in to bat in their first innings at Palam A Stadium in Delhi. Starting the day at 42/2 the Odisha batsman took their time to settle during the initial stage of play. Biplab Samantray and Saurabh Rawat played patiently and notched up half-centuries.
Karnataka's Shreyas Gopal picked up a five-wicket haul while the rest of the bowlers found it difficult to get used to the pitch. Odisha eventually ended the second day's play at 318 runs for the loss of no wickets.
Tamil Nadu 218/4 vs Punjab 284
Punjab couldn't add much to their overnight score of 241 as they cleaned up by the Tamil Nadu bowlers for 284 on the second day at Nagpur. Krishnamoorthy Vignesh lead the attack from the front and ended with figures of 4/104. The Tamil Nadu batsman got off to a steady start before losing three quick wickets. However, Kaushik Gandhi and Dinesh Karthik came in to rescue and built a solid partnership between them.
Just when the duo was looking to close in towards their hundred-run partnership Karthik was dismissed. However, Kaushik Gandhi played a cautious knock and remained unbeaten on 75 runs at the end of the day's play. The Tamil Nadu team were 218 for the loss of four wickets at stumps on day 2.
Baroda 97 and 133 beat Bengal 76 and 133
In what turned out to be a bowler's paradise at Vh Bansi Lal cricket stadium in Rohtak, the teams from Bengal and Baroda found it difficult to score and the match eventually ended up in just two days with Baroda emerging victorious. Manoj Tiwary put the Baroda team to bat first and was successful in restricting them to just 97 in the first innings.
However, the Bengal batsmen failed to better their opposition as they were bundled out for just 76 runs in reply. The bowlers had a merry in the second innings as well with Mukesh Kumar picking up a five-wicket haul and restricting the Baroda team to just 133 runs.
A target of 155 runs proved to be too much for the Bengal team as the Baroda bowlers rattled through their batting line-up with Baroda winning the match by 21 runs. Atit Seth was declared Man of the Match for picking up 10 wickets in the match for Baroda.
