Ranji Trophy 2017 Round-up, Round 3 Day 2: KL Rahul and Suresh Raina's struggles continue
Karnataka fight back only to be pegged back as KL Rahul's struggles continue
After being bowled out for 183, few expected Karnataka to roar back into the contest on the second day itself. More so, because Hyderabad had already added 51 runs by the end of day's play. However, a run-out at the top of the order triggered a collapse which saw Shreyas Gopal bagging five wickets as Hyderabad were bundled out for 136.
With a first-innings lead in the bag, it was KL Rahul's time to shine but left-arm spinner Mehdi Hasan rattled his stumps after the opener had added 23 runs. Hasan struck thrice more to remove Mayank Agarwal, Samarth and Gowtham - all three of them bowled. Karnataka, by the end of day's play, managed to put up 127 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets with Karun Nair and Stuart Binny at the crease.
Brief Score: Karnataka 183 & 127/4 lead Hyderabad 136 (Kolla 68, S.Gopal 17/5) by 174 runs.
Mumbai vs TN poised for an interesting finish
Continuing from their overnight score of 314/7, Mumbai were allowed to add only 60 more runs to their score before losing all of their wickets. With a first-innings lead on the line, TN batsmen set out to score as many runs as possible before inviting Mumbai to bat again.
Though their start was not as expected with the experienced duo of Abhinav Mukund and Murali Vijay already back in the hut, the pair of Baba Indrajith and Washington Sundar steadied the ship. While the former went on to complete his century, Washington added 69 runs to his name.
Brief Score: Mumbai 374 (Shaw 123, Vijay Shankar 52/4) lead Tamil Nadu 239/5 (Indrajith 105*) by 135 runs.
UP waste a sensational start to the day
A spirited Uttar Pradesh team dismissed as many as six Maharashtra batsmen, including centurion Ankit Bawane, for just 38 runs in the morning session of the day's play to restrict the visitors to a score of 312. Left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers and added four more dismissals to his three-wicket tally from yesterday.
In reply, after losing Himanshu Asnora early on, Almas Shaukat and Shivam Chaudhary added 101 runs for the second wicket before the former departed on a personal score of 63. With Suresh Raina walking in next, the team would have been optimistic of, at least, finishing the day strongly. However, the World Cup winner departed without troubling the scoreboard and UP ultimately went from 131/1 to 152/6 in no time. Though Saurabh and Eklavya Dwivedi fought back, UP's chances to register a first innings lead look slim with 232 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets.
Brief Score: Uttar Pradesh 232/7 (Shaukat 63, Khurana 38/4) trail Maharashtra 312 by 80 runs.
Hanuma Vihari slams a triple century as Andhra pile up 584 runs
Coming out to bat with 143 runs already to his name, Andhra's captain Hanuma Vihari had his sights set on a triple century. With Ricky Bhui to accompany him, who completed his century as well, Vihari batted for two and a half sessions today to complete his 300 following which he declared his team's innings instantly.
In reply, Odisha added 32 runs for the loss of a wicket by the end of day's play.
Brief Score: Andhra 584/5 declared (Vihari 302, Bhui 100) lead Odisha 32/1 (Bhatt 12/1) by 552 runs.
