Ranji Trophy Day 1 Roundup: Ravindra Jadeja takes 6 wickets against Hyderabad, Shreyas Iyer scores patient 167

Jadeja now has 30 wickets and five 5-wicket hauls from 5 innings so far this season

Mysuru recieved a special gift on the occasion of Dasara in the form of Virender Sehwag’s century. Barely two days after announcing his retirement from International cricket and IPL, Haryana’s Virender Sehwag came all guns blazing, smashing a 119-ball 100, against defending champions Karnataka in their Ranji Trophy tie. Sehwag finished at 136, putting Haryana in a commanding position on day one of the Ranji Trophy.

The 37-year old was his usual destructive self, smashing an array of boundaries along with 3 mighty hits to the fence. Earlier in the day, Haryana won the all-important toss and decided to bat first on a flat surface at the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wodeyar Ground in Mysuru. The dashing opener was supported by Jayant Yadav, who also brought up his century.

However, Karnataka did well to come back to the game, dismissing Sehwag for 136, and soon after there were a flurry of wickets, as Haryana were trottling at 319-8. HS Sharath was the pick of the bowlers for Karnataka with figures of 4-47, which included a hat-trick.

Brief Scores: Haryana 319 for 8 (Sehwag 136, Jayant Yadav 100, Sharath 4-47) v Karnataka

In yet another enthralling encounter between Saurashtra and Hyderabad in Rajkot, the hosts who won the toss and decided to bat, were in for a rude shock when they were cheaply bundled out for a mere 102 runs in their first innings. In reply, their bowlers came back strongly dismissing Hyderabad for 148, courtesy a brilliant 6-wicket haul from Ravindra Jadeja.

Saurashtra did conceed the first innings lead, but the batsman would be inspired to bat well in their second innings, thanks to Jadeja’s dream spell. In the second innings, Saurashtra were 10-0, still trailing Hyderabad by 36 runs.

Jadeja now has five 5-wicket hauls from as many innings, and a total of 30 wickets as of yet in this Ranji season – a phenomenal return
