Ranji Trophy Round 9, Day 4 Round-up: Jangid stars in Vidarbha victory, Karnataka eliminated
The defending champions, and the side that looked unassailable in the last season, Karnataka, have been ousted from the Ranji Trophy as they failed to win their game against Maharashtra in the ninth round of the 2015 Ranji Trophy.
Resuming their second innings at 61/1, Karnataka needed another 232 runs to win, but were bowled out for 239, thus losing to Maharashtra by 53 runs.
Karnataka (toss) 180 (Agarwal 33, Sanklecha 4-53) and 239 lost to Maharashtra 212 (Bawne 87*, Aravind 3-35, Vinay 2-44) and 260 (Mundhe 81, Tripathi 78, Vinay 4-71) in Pune.
Ravi Jangid starred with both, the bat and the ball for Vidarbha as they beat Haryana by 31 runs in Nagpur. Resuming at 66/2 in their second innings, Haryana were bowled out for 232, with Jangid picking up seven wickets in their second innings, added to the four he picked up in the first.
He had also hit a brilliant century scoring 110, in Vidarbha’s massive first innings total of 504/7.
Vidarbha (toss) 504/7d (Fazal 126, Jangid 110, Sarvate 103*, Shanware 55, Harshal 2-70) beat Haryana 241 (Saini 67, Bishnoi 47, Jangid 4-41, Sarvate 4-50) and 232 (Jangid 7-59) by an innings and 31 runs in Nagpur.
In Group B, Mumbai drew with Gujarat, who finished on 421 in their second innings in reply to Mumbai’s total of 531. Mumbai were 227/6 in their second innings at stumps.
Mumbai 531 (Herwadkar 192, Suryakumar Yadav 103, Iyer 75, Axar 3-99) and 227/6 (Bhatt 4-76) drew with Gujarat (toss) 421 (Merai 166, Axar 88, Thakur 6-107) in Mumbai.
In another draw, Baroda were 171/2 in their second innings, who were bowled out for 321 in their first innings, in reply to Uttar Pradesh’s 524 in the first innings.
Baroda (toss) 321 (Rayudu 70, Waghmode 56, Chawla 3-41, Praveen Kumar 2-50) and 171/2 drew with Uttar Pradesh 524 (Umang Sharma 215, Praveen Kumar 84, Munaf 2-42) in Greater Noida.
In Group C, Services beat Tripura by an innings and 62 runs in Agartala, after Tripura, who were 9/0 overnight, were dismissed for 220 in their second innings. Services had made 512 in their first innings riding on Rajat Paliwal’s double-hundred.
Services (toss) 512 (Paliwal 203, Lohchab 95, Rana Dutta 4-79) beat Tripura Tripura 229 (Banik 46, Pathania 3-49) and 220 (Parvinder 58, Raushan Raj 3-37) by an innings and 62 in Agartala.
Jharkhand qualified for the knockouts as they defeated Hyderabad by 10 wickets when they dismissed them for 267 in the second innings after Hyderabad were asked to follow-on. Jharkhand hunted down their target of 27 runs with utmost ease.
Jharkhand 388/8d (toss) (Tiwary 209*) and 29/0 beat Hyderabad 143/9 (Jaskaran 3-32, Kaushal 3-35) and 267 (Anirudh 78*, Shukla 5-89) by 10 wickets in Hyderabad.
With the league stages of the Ranji Trophy now over, it is time for the knockouts. Three teams each from Group A and Group B qualify for the knockouts while two teams from Group C do so. The teams that have qualified for the eliminators are:
Group A: Vidarbha, Bengal, Assam
Group B: Mumbai, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh
Group C: Saurashtra, Jharkhand
