Ranking all of India's Super Over wins in T20Is ft. 2024 vs Sri Lanka
The excitement of a Super Over in T20 cricket never fails to captivate fans around the world. This thrilling concept, designed to add a nail-biting finish to closely contested matches, has become a staple in the shortest format of the game.
For Indian cricket enthusiasts, the Super Over has provided some unforgettable moments, with the national team finding themselves in this high-pressure situation four times in T20I history.
India's journey with this phenomenon began long before the concept was officially introduced. Their first-ever tie-breaking encounter was a bowl-out against Pakistan during the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa. However, the current method, which has been deemed a fairer way to decide the winner, was introduced later and has since produced some of the most dramatic finishes in T20I cricket.
From Rohit Sharma's heroic sixes in Hamilton to Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy brilliance in Pallekele, India's victories have been marked by exceptional performances and thrilling conclusions.
Here, we rank all of India's wins in T20Is in such situations, celebrating the memorable moments and the players who rose to the occasion.
Ranking all of India's Super Over wins in T20Is
#4 IND vs NZ, Hamilton - 2020
Thirteen years after their first T20I tie was resolved by a bowl-out against Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup, India faced their first Super Over in T20Is against New Zealand in Hamilton during the third T20I of a five-match series in 2020.
Both teams ended their innings at 179 runs, with Rohit Sharma contributing a crucial 65 for India. Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja bowled economical spells to restrict New Zealand despite Kane Williamson’s explosive 95.
In the one-over contest, Jasprit Bumrah, returning from injury, uncharacteristically conceded 17 runs. However, Rohit Sharma shone as he smashed consecutive sixes off Tim Southee’s last two balls, securing a thrilling win for India.
#3 IND vs NZ, Wellington - 2020
Just two nights after their Hamilton triumph, India and New Zealand faced another Super Over in Wellington during the fourth T20I of the series. Batting first, India posted 165/8, thanks to Manish Pandey’s vital 50. New Zealand matched the score with 165/7, sending the game into another one-over-a-side contest.
Jasprit Bumrah redeemed himself by restricting New Zealand to only 12 runs in the Super Over. KL Rahul then eased the pressure with a first-ball six off Tim Southee, followed by a four, effectively sealing the match and securing a 4-0 series lead for India.
#2 IND vs AFG, Bengaluru - 2024
On January 17, 2024, India played a thrilling match against Afghanistan at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India’s batting lineup initially struggled, finding themselves at 22/4.
However, an unbeaten 190-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh helped India post a formidable 212/4. Afghanistan, undeterred, managed to tie the score thanks to strong performances by Mohammed Nabi and Gulbadin Naib.
This match saw not one, but two Super Overs. In the first Super Over, both teams scored 16 runs. The second time around, India managed just 11 runs after losing both wickets. Ravi Bishnoi then bowled an exceptional over, dismissing both Afghan batters for just one run, ensuring a comfortable win for India in the end.
#1 IND vs SL, Pallekele - 2024
Arguably the most dramatic of India’s Super Over wins occurred in Pallekele on July 31, 2024. In a nail-biting finish, Suryakumar Yadav’s masterful captaincy led India to victory.
Sri Lanka, chasing 138, seemed to have the match in hand at 110/1. However, Washington Sundar’s two crucial wickets in the 17th over turned the tide. Rinku Singh, tasked with the penultimate over, conceded only three runs and took two key wickets, including that of the well-set Kusal Perera.
With Sri Lanka needing six runs off the final over, Suryakumar Yadav brought himself on to bowl instead of the expected Mohammed Siraj. He brilliantly took two wickets, forcing the game into a Super Over.
Washington Sundar then delivered a stellar performance, taking two wickets in three balls and restricting Sri Lanka to just two runs. India chased down the target in a single delivery, with Suryakumar hitting a boundary off the first ball, sealing a remarkable victory.
