Ravi Shastri assigns interesting nicknames to Indian fast bowlers
Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, during his time with the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals came up with interesting nicknames like “The Rockstar” to Ravindra Jadeja or “Jinks” for Ajinkya Rahane. And it looks like he has competition in the form of former India all-rounder and the current team Director of the Indian team Ravi Shastri, who has come up with nicknames for the fast bowlers within the team.
Speaking on the sidelines of India’s next group game against Ireland, the 52-year-old responded to a query on Mohammad Shami by saying that he doesn't know who Shami is and knows the pacer only by the name that has been kept by him.
"I don't know who Mohammad Shami is, for me, he is the Nawab of Kolkata," Shastri told on Monday.
The Bengal pacer isn't the only one who has been given a nickname. The other fast bowlers like Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma have also got alternate names, thanks to Shastri.
“For me, Mohit is the Haryana Express and Umesh, the Vidarbha Hurricane. They deserve these names, they have done well in the tournament,” he said.
We can't get complacent after four wins: Shastri
The former opener also urged the media to talk more about the manner in which the fast bowlers have bowled in the World Cup so far, but cautioned the side against taking things for granted after winning just four encounters.
"Yaar, you guys talk about the pace of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson, when our men are bowling that quick, write about it.
“Yes, we have won, but that's done for me now. We have five more games to win the World Cup and that's what we are focusing on now," he said.
