Ravi Shastri resigns from ICC cricket committee

Ravi Shastri during his tenure as the India Team-Director

Ravi Shastri has resigned as a member of the Cricket Committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC), of which he has been a member as a media representative for the last six years. As of yet, there is no hint that his resignation from the committee has anything to do with him being overlooked for the job of the Indian National Coach.

Shastri is thought to have expressed his desire to resign from the committee quite some time ago and has even written to ICC chairman Shashank Manohar about the possibility of his resignation. He stated that he has been a member of the committee for quite some time and he believes that it’s necessary for him to take a break from administrative responsibilities and suggested that it may be time for some one else to step in.

The committee's meeting, which was held on 2-3 June at Lords, was missed by Shastri due to his commentary assignments. However, he did confirm sending in his resignation but did not divulge further details.

There have been recent speculations at the ongoing annual conference of the International Cricket Council debating about Anil Kumble’s replacement for the post of chairman of its cricket committee in the wake of his appointment as the Indian coach. There were even suggestions of Sourav Ganguly stepping in to fill the vacancy once Kumble left.

However, Kumble has indicated that he wishes to continue in his present position.

"There is absolutely no conflict of interest. All things have been addressed. There is the ICC Cricket Committee, for which I will not be able to dedicate as much time. However, I see no reason why I cannot continue as its chairman.

“There are other national coaches like Darren Lehmann, Andrew Strauss and (Rahul) Dravid (all work for their respective boards in different positions)," Kumble was quoted as saying.

However carrying out both the responsibilities as a coach as well as the Chairman of the Cricket Committee is bound to be taxing and there are concerns if the former leg-spinner can take time off from his coaching assignments to devote to committee work.

The final decision and changes in the committee will possibly be made clear once the ICC Annual Conference ends on July 2.
