Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli part of a spoof video of Lagaan

Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli have been instrumental in India’s success lately

Ravichandran Ashwin has been in the news for all the good reasons lately. He has been all that is right for Indian cricket and his achievement off late has been nothing short of spectacular; his latest being the 13 wicket scalp in the final Test of the 4 match series against New Zealand at Indore which India won by 321 runs. He also achieved his career-best figures of 7-59 in the second innings of the same match as New Zealand were bowled out for 151.

He broke numerous records throughout the Test series. He became the youngest Indian ever to reach the tally of 200 wickets in Tests. He has taken 21 five-wicket hauls in Tests, and 6 ten wicket hauls – second only to Anil Kumble who has 8.

He is the only Indian since Harbhajan Singh, who in 2001 picked up 2 ten wicket hauls in the same series. Harbhajan had achieved this feat in the famous Test series against Australia 15 years ago.

Ashwin has won seven man-of-the-series awards in his last eight Test series. Also, this was his fourth consecutive MoS award in Test series. Only Imran Khan and Malcolm Marshall have the same record. His majestic performance in the Test series has also put him on top of the ICC bowlers rankings surpassing Dale Steyn.

The amount of turn which Ravichandran Ashwin has been able to produce on these Indian pitches have been a delight to watch for Indian fans all over the country. He has been able to turn the ball square on almost all the pitches in the country over the past few years. The best of the batsman, including the likes of Ab De Villiers, Hashim Amla, and Kane Williamson have constantly struggled against Ashwin.

Along with Ravindra Jadeja, the Ashwin-Jadeja pair has become one of the most fearsome duos in Test cricket. In 13 Test matches where these 2 spinners have bowled together, they have picked 144 wickets between them, with 13 five-fors and 3 ten-fors. Astonishingly, this is more than 11 wickets per Test.

The amount of turn generated by them, especially Ashwin is quite reminiscent of India’s very own fictional spinner – Kachra from Lagaan. Kachra mesmerized the audience with the amount of turn he generated in the match against the Brits in the movie and was the star for the Champaner villagers. Bhuvan, who was the captain of the team was very supportive of Kachra throughout the film.

In the same way, Virat Kohli has been instrumental in Ashwin’s success and has supported him well over the years.

Here is a hilarious spoof video which features Virat Kohli and Ravi Ashwin in place of the two beloved characters from Lagaan.
