Recalling all England tours to India

England is among the very few teams that gave India a run for their money on Indian soil

England's past in India

England have toured India since the early 1930s and 83 years later, there’s no love lost between the age-old antagonists. Though sub-continent conditions are more tilted towards India, the Englishmen didn’t let themselves go into their shells.

Rather, they countered fire with fire and even got India in a spot of bother quite a few times. The following elaborations of England’s adventure in India will tell many stories.

England tour of India 1933/34

Winner: England 2-0

Captain

England: Douglas Jardine

India: C.K. Nayudu

Douglas Jardine ensured that India was unable to win a single Test on their debut on home soil

The tour will be etched in the memories as India’s inaugural Test series at home. C.K Nayudu’s India had everything in their favour - The crowd, the pitch, enthusiasm. What they lacked is the experience and England didn’t take time to cash in the inexperience of the Indian team.

Though India drew one of the 3 matches, they never looked like getting England on the mat during any stage of the remaining two matches. Douglas Jardine and Co ensured that the series was wrapped up with ease.

Cyril Walters was the top run scorer with 284 runs and left-arm orthodox bowler Hedley Verity was the top wicket taker in the series with 23 wickets. Lala Amarnath and Amar Singh were the top run-getter and top wicket-taker for India with 203 runs and 14 wickets.

England tour of India 1951/52

Though Nigel Howard didn’t taste much success in his international career, he fitted in well for Lancashire

Winner: Draw 1-1

Captain

India: Vijay Hazare

England: Nigel Howard

India had to wait for 18 more years before they went to play England for yet another Test series. Yet again, India was on the brink of another series drubbing at England’s hands, but instead they recorded their first Test win versus England at Madras (now Chennai) in the final Test of the series.

The win dodged a series loss for the Indians and they managed to eke out a draw. Allan Watkins was England’s top run-scorer with 450 runs while Vinoo Mankad stupendously picked up 34 wickets in 5 matches.
