Reports: Ravichandran Ashwin injured during training camp

Ravichandran Ashwin in action during the ICC World Cup 2015

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin left the training session due to a hand injury sustained on the final day of the preparatory camp of the Indian Cricket Team, in Bangalore. The Indian Cricket team is having its first official training camp under its new appointed coach Anil Kumble and with a couple of weeks before India tour the West Indies, an injury to India’s most experienced and successful spinner in the squad would be a huge blow to them. As per the reports from Headlines Today, a ball hit Ashwin’s right arm after which the off-spinner left the morning training session with a bandage on his injured hand.

The success of West-Indian spinners in the recently concluded Tri-Angular series in the Caribbean showed that the pitches there would give a certain amount of assistance to the spinners. The absence of Ashwin’s services in the upcoming tour of the West Indies will be a huge blow to the Virat Kohl-led Indian Team.

Ashwin has been in prolific form in the past couple of years. He became the highest wicket taker in tests for the 2015-2016 season, and also went on to become the No: 1 bowler in Tests. He has played 32 Test matches and has 176 wickets to his name and is fastest Indian to take 100 wickets in Test cricket; Ashwin reached the three-figure mark in his 18th Test match.

Ashwin was recently roped in by Jolly Rovers for the Tamil Nadu Premier League, which is to begin in the month of August. It is very difficult to speculate about Ashwin’s availability for the Rovers or even for the Indian team due to the extent of the injury.

India tour of West Indies begins on the 21st of July. India is scheduled to play four Test matches against West Indies. It is going to be India’s first series under the coaching of Anil Kumble. After much confusion and drama surrounding the selection of coach for the Indian Cricket Team, it will be interesting to see how they perform in the longest format of the game in the Caribbean.
