Reports: National selector Roger Binny to lose his position for 'conflict of interest'

India cricket team’s father-son duo in trouble – Stuart and Roger Binny

Roger Binny may lose his place in the selection committee for the Indian cricket team for his son Stuart’s presence in the team, according to reports in the Times of India.

New BCCI president Shashank Manohar has come up with a 28-point suggestion list dealing with the problematic issue of ‘conflict of interest’, a scandal that has engulfed Indian cricket in recent times.

A sub-section of the list of suggestions, to be discussed at the board's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on November 9, deals with the national selectors, who are not supposed to have 'financial or business interests' with any of the players.

All-rounder Stuart Binny has been on the fringes of India team selection in recent times, and has even received the vocal backing of India captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. However, his failure to produce match winning performances, combined with his father’s presence in the selection committee, has made the junior Binny an object of ridicule.

Binny’s conflict of interest

Former India all-rounder Roger was appointed as a selector from South Zone in September 2012, and still has one year remaining on his contract. It is learnt, however, that he will asked at the upcoming board meeting to vacate his post.

"I believe he should step down from his post. His work as national selector has been impeccable but with Stuart part of the Indian team, the 'conflict of interest' issue might come up in different quarters," a senior BCCI official said on Thursday.

"The board is planning to implement the points suggested by Manohar into its constitution and if and when it is done, Roger's position may directly be in conflict. The rest of the selectors still have one more year on their term and may be asked to continue," the official added.

“Regarding conflict of interest over Roger, we are not part of the selection meetings and don't know if Roger is present when his son's name comes up for discussion. So it's very difficult to prove a conflict in this case," said BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary.

Apart from Roger's term, it is believed East Zone might also ask to replace selector Syed Saba Karim, who currently resides in Noida. Also, former chairman of selectors and current Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president Dilip Vengsarkar might be open to taking up the job again.
