Rishi Dhawan - A young all rounder for the future
Did you know that a 23 year old all-rounder has already taken 42 wickets in the Ranji Trophy this year? That too in just 6 matches, when the tournament has barely reached its mid-way point! After having a look at his average in both batting and bowling, I am sure you will also be convinced that this lad has got a lot of potential.
He only needs to be nourished under a capable mentor and I can foresee the unlimited possibilities. Yes, I am referring to Rishi Dhawan, the young and vibrant captain of the Himachal Pradesh ranji squad. He has also played for Kings XI Punjab and currently plays for Mumbai Indians. He has got a superb batting average of 41.54 in first class matches and a good average of 24 in list A matches. Likewise, his bowling average in first class matches is an impressive 22.79. He made his T20 debut in 2006, list A debut in 2008 and first class debut in 2009.
In terms of wickets taken this season, he is running far ahead of his nearest rival Jalaj Saxena who has taken only 29 wickets. In November, he bowled a magical spell – taking 10 wickets while playing against Assam in the Ranji Trophy. Also, he had given a vital contribution of 58 runs in the same match. He has taken 5 wickets in an innings five times this season. Overall, he has scored a total of 350 runs which includes 50 or more runs scored 4 times in this season. Though Himachal Pradesh lost to Kerala on 6th December but Dhawan is hopeful of making a comeback in the knock out stages. He seems to be a focused bowler who is taking care of his line and length and has bowled really well.
His coach from Himachal Pradesh, Rajdeep Kalsi, has got tremendous faith in his capabilities – especially his in swinging yorkers and his ability to bowl reverse swing. Kalsi has said that his batting style depicts the ease with which he plays. Kalsi has also praised his positive attitude. Thus, it appears that this hard working and committed player has the skills and temperament needed to be a good all rounder. He could be of tremendous utility to Team India in the times to come.
Of course, the only area of concern is that he will have to improve substantially on his speed. Otherwise, this cricketer has a well built physique and seems ready to rock. Team India really needs an all-rounder as Yuvraj is fading away. If Rishi takes his chances, he might prove to be the second Dhawan who would surprise the world of international cricket!
